Updated Timeline

Time line of the 1850's

12/3/2012 and 12/4/2012

In class today we did an ED Cafe activity. Our activity was to show that the person we studied was te most important person in comtribuing to the movement. I had Harriet Beecher Stowe. When we were discusing our people i found it easy to relate all of how they each contributed to the movement. Many people had relationships with other people which helped them make a difference. Ofcourse everyone believes they are right so we were bound to butt heads a bit especially with a expressive class like ours. I found it no trouble to say what i felt and why i thought it, although sometimes what i said didn't make sense i felt that i might have gotten people to think of other things as well. It was one of my favorite classes and i loved how the class room was full of chatter and how we were all so passionate in our discusions.

12/30/12

In class we watched a clip about the debate lincon and Douglas had. This debate helped me better understand how really different each canidate was and how they would state their own opinions and how they disagreed withone another. I noticed that the crowds would get really in to these debates. This was another perfect example of how technology has helped me better understand what is going on in class. Whatching the debate gave me a sense of how people were divided and how passionate both canidates were. It goes to show out side sources and an extra tool can help really connect the dots for some people like me. Another example of how great technology is!

11/27/12 11/28/12

In class we read information on the case of Dred Scott. It was mind blowing that people were considered to be property. When you look at a person you see them as they are, a person, when you look at land or something someone would consider "property" your first thought is not humans. What makes no sense is how anyone can just own a human being its like "hey im selling my brother, 100 bucks and he is all yours". One other thing we leared is that lincon did not agree with the whole dred Scott case and that Douglas wasn't overly vocal on his opinion. Pretty much everything Lincon was for Douglass was against. This is what helped the people decide who they wanted to vote for because they were almost complete oppistes which made it eaiser to guess there opinions on things.

11/18/2012

In class we read a chapter from Harriet Stowes novel "Uncle Tom's Cabin". I had Harriet as my person to research so i came to class with alittle more knowledge on her and her background. She was an aboloinitionist that work twords getting the Fugitve slave act repealed. In class we saw how slaves would risk a posibitly of getting caught or being more badly beaten for a posibility of freedom if you succeed. I thought that if i was in there place i would take the risk of being free because you really have nothing to lose but you have so much more to gain. It maybe hard leaving the people you care about butonce you are free you could try and go back and save others as well like other people like Harriet Tubman had done.

11/15/2012 blog post

today in class we watched a Movie about the Mexican war. During the movie we took notes and were able to better undersand what was going on not only in class but what was happening during that time period. At the end of the video we took a 5 question true false quiz which was an open note quiz. I think i did perty good on the quiz but almost half way through the Movie i realized that i should have focused more on the actual movie itself rather than worrying about recording down the content and missing other key parts. I feel like when we take a look at outside sources other than what we learn in class that I better understand things and it helps me connect and peice events in time together.

11/9/2012post

We learned about the underground rail road in class. we learned that it was run by Hariet Tubman. Hariet Tubman was a former slave who escaped but made it her goal to go back and save as many more slaves as she could. We read several text book's out look on the under ground railroads and came across alot of the same material and some very different material. Looing at different doccuments helped us determain the truth and what may not be exactly true.most of the documents said stuff about people making stops along the way or white people helping the slaves. If any one ever got causght helping the slaves escape they would have to face legal charges. The slaves were veiwed as property so they treated it like it was stolen property not a person looking for freedom. I don't agree with this desicion and think that they shouldn't be trated as property.

day4/ 30daychallenge

Today in clsss we discussed the constituions relation to slaver. The question was "does the constituion suport slavery"? At first look i said that it doesn't come out and say they support it but they don't discourage it either. In the constitution you can find many loop holes that would make slavery be considered an "ok" thing to do. I also got in to a conversation with Mr. Boyle where he asked me well is they don't say their against it and if they don't do anything to discourage it then what are they really saying? Everything clicked, i realized that usually if you ask someone a question and they don't answer its usually because its something you wouldn't want to hear which is kind of what the constitution is toying with by being wishy washy lets them not only get away with slavery but secretly support it as well. Weather or not people agree the constitution in certain ways supports slavery. Now back to my 30 day challenge, my day two pictureis of a sign in my house that says family. Family is my everything, without them i would have nothing. I have a bunch of cousins and uncles and aunts who i all love and care for and we all extreamly close. I don't know where i woulod be or what i would be like with out my family in my life. My day 3 picture is of school supplies. Believe it or not i actually enjoy school, i love being with people everyday and having conversations with classmates that i wouldn't normally talk to outside of school. School provides stability and allows me to be on a set schedule and routine that helps me be successful each day.

day 2 blog 30 day challenge

30 day, 30 pictures, at least one a day. The pictures of something in my life i am greatful for or things i don't know what i would do with out. what i am looking to get out of my chalenge im not quit sure but I'm hoping along the way i pick up a few thing that i will always treasure. They say you may not realize what you have till its gone, and thats what my challenge is trying to prevent, i want to make sure that everyone knows how much they mean to me and how they impacted my life, and i want to know what things that i wouldn't be able to go days or weeks with out missing them. Now a days we take everything for granted when what we should be doing is celebrate the people and things we have around us. So here it goes, 30 day, at least one picture a day.My first picture is of my closest friends i have at school. These are the girls i trust and who i go to when i need advice or i need someone to listen to what i have to say. All of these girls have a special place in my heart and always find a way to make me laugh even in my darkest days. We have all had our ups and downs but at the end of the day they are almost like a second family and we get past what ever obsticals get in our way. I don't know what i would do with out them by my side.

day 6

Today we went on a scavenger hunt! We were told to go around the first floor with our devices and scan all of the QR codes we could find and by the end we should have 10. All of the QR codes contained information on The Battles of the American Revolution and we had to figure out what the battle was and what was the date that battle had taken place. One of the battles we learned about was The battle of trenton Which was when Goerge Washington had his troops surround the Hessians ( German mercinaries). They accomplished this by crossing the Delaware river on Christmas night. Soon after that battle The Battle of Princeton occured in January of 1777. The Battle was the site of a colonial victorry that gave the Continental Army the boost it needed. I think that this scavenger hunt helped us distinguish the different battles and how each had a role in each others. Some battles made the continental army's convidence grow, and some shattered it. With each win that the colonies were able to obtain brought them closer to their goal and they were not giving up at all. I think these battles cold be kind of a metaphor how life is, because we all have some minor set backs but we have other thing we still have to deal with and we have to over come obsticals just as the continental army had to keep charging ahead.

day 4

Are we really as bad off as we think we are? I was asked this question in class today and my first reasponse was yes. Yes, because we are told so many people are laid off, many people are going hungry, people are in dept, we are at war, people are dying at war. Now my teacher asked us a few more questions, Are the malls empty when you go shopping?,No. Are there no cars on the high way?, No. How many of you know people at war? About five hands went up in my class including me. That left me with the question still, Are we really as bad as we think we are? So i guess in a way no we aren't. We may have to cut back on a few christmas gifts or not go on as many vacations but what makes us so bad? I guess we aren't that bad because i look around me and i may not see everyones struggles but i see the girl next to me with her ugg boots and the kid up front with the Northface backpack, i don't see anything that would alarm me that anything major is going on. So why are we told all of these things? to keep us working hard, maybe to try and watch our expences but honestly we are not at all THAT bad. We are not perfect, people are still at war and people are still having trouble paying bills and getting laid off but we have been worse. So now that i look back at the question we were given i would say no because the malls are full, the highways are pact and not very many of us are affected by war.

day 2

IN class we did project presentation. I had Betsy Ross the women who made the first american flag. Mrs. Ross personaly knew Goerge Washington, because she was his seamstress. Mrs. Ross ran her own business after her husband had died and kept it going. When aproached by George washington and asked to make a flag for the colonies she agreed. The flag she made had 13 red and white alternating stripes along with 13 white stars in a sea of blue.what i mostly took away from Mrs. Ross' case was that she was one of the first women to actually get credit for something. There still is no legal documentation that she had made the first american flag but htere is so much history that comes with her name. Most women were never recorded in text books that they helped out the war until her, she opened the gate for many women. Who no's, if she never got her credit for what she had done then maybe we wouldn't have women wouldn't have made such history. All it takes is one person to light the fire to start something that could potentally be eye opening. When Betsy Ross came out with this flag many other women could start getting their cresit as well begining a trend that would soon lead to many accomplishments by women.

Day 6 post.

IN class we discused the Bunker hill and olive branch petition. The olive Branch Petition was the colonies asking for territory they won in the Indian war and asking for representaion. The kind of Representation that the colonies wanted was to have a say in taxes and laws. The colonies still wanted to have the kings support and agreed to still be loyal to him but they wanted more of a say. In their agrument to the king they stated that the Battle of lexington and Concord were in self defence. the king Rejected their petition. Another oppinion in the matter of breaking away from britian was Tomas Payne who wrote Common Sense and said that if people sgreed with britian then they were agreeing with the fact that it was ok to murder people. He believed that any friendly connection with Britian was un natural and that Britain was causing the city of Boston to starve because they would not let anyone out of boaston. In reasponse to Common Sense an ammerican loyalis, James Chelmers wrote The Plain Truth. He wanted to stay with Britain and still be under their control. He made accusations that Democracy was a bad way to go and that they should just stick with Britain. He said that the taxes were fair, having Britain back them up was helpful and that because Britain is so far away it will mean they will be less strict. I disagree with that last statment, i think that by them being father away they are going to send people who will follow up the laws they make and strictly enforce them. These Documents were very helpful in my comprehending of where different parts of the Colonies stand and that not everyone wants britain completely out of their country.

Day 4 post

Today i learned that over time its hard for some people to tell the difference between what is true and what is false. For example in the case of the "shot heard around the world" there were accounts that both the british and American accounts that the one another was the first o shoot. In class to day we looked at multiple documents all claiming that different things accured during this battle. Some of the British documents even said the British were the first ones to shoot. My main question is, what do i believe? I have so many different stories from poeple all claiming they saw or heard what happened. In reality you can't just believe anything you read, because here i am still confused on who was right in this situation. In order to figure out all of the possibilities that are false you have to look into why this person was writing this, for pleasure, for legal purposes, or for self gain. If it is for legal purposes or self gain you may not want to believe what it says. When someone writes something in a journal, no one is going to see what they are writing, and they are not going to get into trouble for writiing it, some people also write false things or put their opinion in their work to much, but sometimes journals are not always accurate as well. You just have to learn how to eliminate the ones that can not possibly be right and ones that could possibly be right. I think that this activity helped open my ideas that i really have to always watch what i use as my primary sources and how peoples opinions conflict in my different sources.

day 2 post

Today we did an Edcafe discussion in class, in the begining there wasn't much talking and more so people trying to get down information, but after the initial shock everyone began to relax and take in the information and ask questions. One of the events that showed me how a bunch of things conected was the Townshed acts. The townshed acts contained The Sugar act, the Stamp act, and the Quartering act. The colonies were very against these acts which helped them form no taxation without representation." All the people wanted to do was be heard and let the British Parliment that what they were doing was wrong and wouldn't be tolerated. These acts caused an event called the boston tea party. Even tough the tea britain was importing was less than what they were paying for the Colonies would not purchase their tea and would make their own and smuggle other tea into the country. This caused the company to retreat because it could feel the tension between the colonies and britain, but the ship wasn't allowed to leave until the tea was sold. So one night a group of colonists dressed up as indians and boarded the boat and tiped the tea barrels in to the boston harbor. The British parlement had no idea that the colonist were going to commit such an act and caused such a scene. All the colonist were trying to do was be heard and that was the only reason why they dumped the tea into the harbor it was an act of passion so the Parliment could take a step back and see that the Colonist were over these acts Britain kept throwing at them and that they were going to take a stand for what they believe in. If Britain had listened than none of this would have happened and there would have been no need for the Boston Macasar or the boston tea party because the Colonist would have "no taxation without representation".

Day 6 post

Today we talked about the French and indian war. This war was lead by George Washington. George Washington wanted to try and get through the Appilation Montains and go around so that he could deliver a message to virginia faster. when he went over the mountains he was faced by the french territory. The French wanted him out and brought in troops to fight him and what little men he had with him. All of the odds were against Washington, he had few men, limeted reasources, no amunition, and no one to come in for back up. He was out numbered and had no second options.in the end he had a military victory but in the end he lost due to no revenue for the army. I learned that you can't always go into forigien territory head on and that you have to make percusions for what may happen if you were confronted with an outside force. I think that George Washinton had alot of courage to try his new thought plan and proceed even when the going got tough. Courage doesn't always require success but you being willing to fail and ready to take on anything that comes you way. George Washington also demostrated perserverence because he didn't just give up when he saw the French in the way he perservired and stuck it out in stead of retreating right away. I think this Event showed you don't always have to win something to do something big.

Day 4

The other day we had the Ed Cafe discousions about the 1st amendment. In that class we went into further dept aout each peice of the first amendment, my part was the right to assembly, which gave people the right to be in a group and do what ever they want with no goverment interfeirence as long as nothing illegal was involved. Another right that i was very fasinated to hear more about was the freedom of press, one point brought up into discousion was how in the library they would have band books that you wouldn't be allowed to read or bring into class in elementry schools. With this situation we discoused about how the componies had the right to publish the books but how the school had the right to deny the books from entering in the school but we discoused that why should the compony be allowed to publish the book and a student not be allowed to bring it into school to read one day, it came down to the matter that the compony has the right to freedom of press and can write what ever they want, but shouldn't the student have the freedom of speech to say that they wanted to read that book in and indepentant reading. What you couldn't decide on weather the school was wrong or right to band these books because it may be a bit inapropreate for their age but if a parent doesn't mid them reading it then why restrict them to not letting them read it. you have to ask yourself, do i want to have more control of what my students can and can't read or should they have the right to read what they want in school.

post for Day 2

In class we were given the option to play our icivics game or to work on out edcafe discousion. I choose to play the Icivics game. I figured out that when i began to play the game i would pick up on certain amendments that i started to remember like the freedom of speech, freedom of religion, right to bare arms, trial by jury, speedy trial, and no cruel and unusual pub=nishments. When i began to look at the peoples problems that i was losing cases on i relized that some of the amendments had loop hoes that i didn't think aout for example for the punishment it had to be cruel AND unusual so if it was just a cruel punishment you couldn't do much about it but let it slide. I found out that their are more thing in real life that if they ever happened to anyone i would know what to do in there situation and relize that i do have a right weather it be to bare arms or to have a speedy trial, no one can violate my rights and go with out being unpunished if you go consult with a layer.

day 4 post

You can't have a country without a leader. That leader in our case is our President but our president doesnt do it all alone, he is in fact one of three branches. The president is part of the executive branch, the president has the power to veto all of the legislative branches or "congresses" laws or bills but if congress has enough votes they can still pass the bills or laws. The Legislative branch is the only branch that can make laws or bills. The Judicial branch can say what ever they want about congresses laws or bills but they have no say if they get passed or not. Once apointed a judge for life the judges no longer need to use the presidents influence. The president had many jobs that he can do he is the only one who can decide if we go to war, he can make treaties, he can appoint ambassadors, judges, and advisors. The prenident makes all and any armed forces desisions. He also makes speeches to congress and tries to promote his ideas or desisions. As you can see there are multiple things that need to happen before something is passed and made final and that everyone has some sort of power over one another.

class summery for day 2

On last thursday we started off class with a quiz on the preamble. The Preamble was a good way to make all of the people aware of what this countries expectations and promises were made to the community. We also learned about different ways power was distributed though people and branches of the goverment. One thing we learned about was Unimeral and bicameral, the Unimerial was when congress had all the power which i don't think would be such a good idea because with too much power in one branch could result in a take over or the peoples rights not being heard. With the Bicameral the two houses could check up on one another allowing each to have a say and they can control what the people want not just what they want. Withhaving people be involved by voting is essential to any democracy allowing people to vote lets them pick the issues they want to be resolved and how they want to go about it. giving all the power to the states in the long run upsets the people because they have no clue what is going on and if it is fair. I beleive that each country should count the same amount too because if every country has a different amount of power then the smaller countries with get run down by the bigger ones alowing the smaller ones to have no say what so ever.Over all this information all conected and looks like our modern day goverment.

things that describe me

One item that i would use to describe me would be my cell phone. Now i know what your thinking, "a cell phone really that’s all she can come up with" but i let you know that i didn't choose my phone because it is my most prized possession because it is not but my phone allows me to contact those who don't live near me. My cell phone lets me talk to my cousins in Texas Connecticut, Georgia and Kentucky who i only see maybe once a year. Now I’m not going to say the only people i talk to on my phone is my family but it makes it a lot easier to check up on all of my family members that live far away. Another reason i would choose this item to describe me is because i love to talk. It doesn't even matter who I am talking to i love to meet new people or talk to people who I’m not that friendly with. When i was younger my family would call me chatterbox because i was always talking about something.

Another item I would use to describe me and what I am about would be a camera. I would choose a camera because I like to capture special moments and I have a good memory of my past. I love pictures, I feel that they let you capture special moment, and that even twenty years later you can see that picture and say “hey I remember that”. Pictures can also show a time line of events in you life, you can see yourself when you were a baby as well as you can see how you grew and changed over the years. I like pictures that show people having fun not just a group photo to show everyone where you went on vacation. The more pictures you take in you life the more times you can reflect on and the more people you remember that may or may not still be in you life.

Another possession that I would say describes me is a jersey. I have been playing sports since I was in kindergarten. I have always like being on a team and being a team player and not having to just relay on my self. I have played soccer for almost eleven years now and I absolutely love it, I have been playing basketball for about five years. I am more of a defensive player but I usually play up. I have always enjoyed to watch other sports’ games as well, so I said a jersey because I have grown up watching and playing sports so it is a part of who I am and will hold a special place in my heart. When I’m not doing sports I am very active and try to always be doing something or am going somewhere.
